Assessment of Older Adults

Our clinic offers neuropsychological evaluation of memory disorders affecting older adults. Testing can provide answers regarding the possible causes of memory changes. We make recommendations and tailor a treatment plan to address specific deficits discovered during the evaluation. We works collaboratively with the patient's physician and provide feedback, support and educational services to family and caregivers.

Many conditions cause impairment of memory and other cognitive functioning. A neuropsychological assessment is recommended to determine the nature and severity of deficits and the optimal course of treatment. The evaluation can determine whether the decline is age-appropriate or other causes are at fault.

Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) is defined as age-associated cognitive impairment that is not severe enough to be diagnosed as dementia. A common subtype of MCI is “amnestic” in which memory is mildly impaired, beyond the level of ordinary aging.

Neuropsychological testing has been shown to be the best way to diagnose MCI. Although many patients progressed from MCI to Alzheimer's Disease, studies have shown that with timely detection and proper treatment, many do revert to baseline of cognitive functioning.
